Executive Director of Human Resources

UCL is one of the world’s leading universities and one of the largest and most complex universities in the UK. Its ethos – that excellence should go hand-in-hand with enriching society – is as strong today as it was at its establishment in 1826. It was first university in England to welcome students of any religion, the first to welcome women on equal terms with men, and the first to hold both a Silver Athena SWAN award and a Race Equality Charter Bronze Award. It is currently ranked 10th worldwide in the 2019 QS World University Rankings, and performed outstandingly well in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise, becoming the UK’s top-rated university for research strength. It also achieved Silver in the Teaching Excellence Framework.

With around 38,000 students, an annual income of over £1.3bn and some 13,000 staff, every one of UCL’s employees is critical to its success. With the concept of “Valuing Staff” sitting at the heart of the UCL 2034 Strategic Plan, there is a fantastic platform to build on, including ensuring the university is able to attract, develop and retain the outstanding talent needed to deliver its academic mission; fostering a more diverse and inclusive UCL community which reflects its position as London’s Global University; creating an environment where all UCL people are supported and valued leading to an inspired and engaged UCL community; and developing a leading-edge HR service that drives innovative people solutions across the institution.

In delivering the above, the successful candidate will possess significant strategic leadership experience, gained in a large, complex organisation at a requisite level of seniority. S/he will bring a track record of creating a high impact, customer-focused, HR function that supports change and delivers continual improvement across a broad range of stakeholders. A proven ability to enhance staff engagement, advance equality, diversity and inclusion and deliver high-quality, value-for-money outcomes will also be vital.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an individual that is genuinely committed to the mission and ethos of UCL and the wider purpose and values of higher education to deliver transformational impact through its people.
