Director of People and Culture

Our vision for people sits alongside our vision for animal welfare.

Director of People and Culture

The RSPCA is the UK’s oldest, largest and best-known animal welfare charity, and we are as committed to alleviating suffering today as when we were founded in 1824. Approaching our bicentenary, the world in which we operate is more complex, and the challenges more diverse than ever before. In this environment, it is vital that we cultivate a modern, forward-thinking approach to our organisational development, to enable us to compete as an employer and to continue to do our important work. This will be an inspiring and rewarding challenge for a candidate who genuinely shares our sense of purpose.

The scale and complexity of the RSPCA is a part of what makes this role so compelling. We have around 1,700 employees and apprentices, plus several thousand volunteers. You will be instrumental in positioning the Society as an employer of choice to which staff and volunteers are proud to belong. Our leadership team, headed by our new Chief Executive and with oversight from our new Chair, has an ambitious vision of our future and a strategic People and Culture directorate lies at its heart.

Leading a team of c.50, you will be passionate about creating a learning culture and an inspiring work environment, informed by 21st century thinking. Your commitment to talent development, good governance, and continuous improvement will be backed by the expertise to shape how our People and Culture offering should grow and develop. You must also be able to articulate strategic goals, align functions, win hearts and minds, and embed best practice for the long term.

Our vision is ambitious and progressive. We are therefore looking for an individual who can bring with them significant experience of setting strategic HR direction in organisations of a similar complexity and scale to the RSPCA. You must be CIPD-qualified, or equivalent, but above all, you need to have a strong affinity with our purpose and the agility to think differently, see new perspectives and a track record of making change happen.
