The Senior HR Advisor role is an integral part of the HR Operations team. You will have a great opportunity to work closely with HR Business Partners, to build strong relationships with and to really make a difference in how we look after our people, who are integral to the success of our business.

The client operate within a unionised environment, and are looking to make significant changes to their culture and ways they do things so it goes without saying that you will need to be a strong technical practitioner, with the ability to effectively manage a variety of employee relations matters.

The work is fast paced, often reactive, and can be frustrating. You will require a high level of resilience, but you will be working on a fantastic, rapidly changing campus, with people who are passionate about changing the lives of our students.

What does the role involve?

  • Working within a unionised environment, build strong, trusting and proactive relationships with our colleagues within our Trade Unions.
  • Managing a wide variety of casework, working closely with the HR Business Partner and HR Advisor. This will involve working on the full range of casework you would expect in such a role including disciplinary, capability and grievance cases. We are looking for proactive practitioners who are able to identify and implement appropriate approaches to quickly resolve issues. You will need to be technically strong, but reflective and able to constantly look to improve your practice.
  • Working proactively with colleagues within the areas you are responsible for, to enable the early identification and focus on areas of management practice/leadership which could be improved. This will include looking for opportunities to coach, develop and challenge managers to ensure that they are effectively supporting the people within their areas. You need to be able to build professional and trusting relationships with people.
  • Continuous improvement - a lot of our practices are the result of legacy and outdated practices, policies and procedures. The role will involve working collaboratively to constantly make iterative changes to how we work. From tweaking letters, to rewriting whole policies.
  • Change management - delivering change that may involve consulting with colleagues but also looking at creative ways to help us deliver culture change that enables the University to be positioned to succeed within the changing environment in which we are operating.
  • Resourcing - you need to be able to work with our specialist Resourcing team and the HR Business Partners to help our colleagues find new and effective ways of resourcing their teams. We want to start to recruit different skills to enhance our offering as a University but our people will need help in doing this!
  • Inclusivity and Diversity - you need to be committed to helping us build on our good practice in this area.

  • Being inquisitive - you need to understand the sector in which we operate, how academia works, what is changing and use this knowledge to really inform your practice. You need to be prepared to learn and evolve.
  • Being a good technical practitioner - you need to know your employment law and be experienced in applying it. We do have to deal with challenging and technical casework, and you need to be confident in your ability to manage it.
  • Being committed to be part of a successful team. To succeed, we need people who are prepared to help develop and coach others, who recognise when others need support and who are prepared to really step in and help. It can be a reactive environment and we need people who are able to deal with and react to curved balls and fast changing priorities.

Experience required

Must have excellent experience within HR operating at a level advising level

You will be responsible for dealing with all the complex cases so must have really good experience around ER

Also the client is looking for candidates with experience of working within a highly unionised environment
