HR Advisor

The Team 

The HR team in London consists of 40 people. The HR generalist team comprises three Senior HR Managers, one HR Manager 3 HR Advisors and the Global IT People and Engagement Lead and is supported by the HR Service Delivery Team in London and Manila.  The generalist team works closely with the HR specialists in Recruitment, Global Mobility, Reward, Pensions & Wellbeing, Employee Relations, HR Systems and Diversity & Inclusion.  

The Role 

The HR Advisor works closely with the Senior HR Manager and the HR Service Delivery Team to provide support and advice to dedicated fee-earner and business services departments.  The HR Advisor will be the first point of contact in respect of operational HR matters for the fee-earners and employees within the departments they support. The HR Advisor will work closely with the Senior HR Manager to implement annual HR Projects and initiatives including appraisal moderation and salary reviews. Along with the Senior HR Manager the HR Advisor should develop good working relationships with the key stakeholders within the areas they support.  

Key Responsibilities 

Appraisal and Salary Review 

  • Assist Senior HR Manager with appraisal moderation and salary review process and any other annual exercises carried out by the team of HR Advisors together with the HR management team 

Absence Management and Parental Leave

  • Manage all aspects of the maternity, paternity, shared parental and unpaid leave processes and oversee reintegration on return from leave
  • Regularly monitor sickness absence statistics and review those with excess levels of absence and discuss next course of action with relevant head of department / line manager
  • Liaise with the Occupational Health (“OH”) service provider on referrals and prepare necessary paperwork prior to appointments. Ensure OH recommendations are followed up as required

Employee Relations

  • Provide advice and guidance on policy or procedural issues to employees, managers and partners
  • Proactively work with the Employee Relations Manager and Senior HR Managers to identify changes and improvements to employment policies and practices
  • Act as the main point of contact for staff regarding any concerns or issues that affect them
  • Liaise with the Employee Relations Manager to assist with disciplinary and grievance investigations and hearings
  • Proactively keep up to date with current employment law and employment trends
  • Regularly analyse management information (e.g. turnover data, exit interview data, salary data etc.) to make recommendations to deal with trends and issues

HR Systems 

  • Work closely with the HR Systems team to ensure the integrity of the HR data is maintained at an exceptional level
  • Responsible for auditing of data required by the Systems team 

Joiners and Leavers

  • Work with the Recruitment Team and HR Service Delivery Team to co-ordinate the joiners and leavers processes to ensure all documentation is produced in an effective and timely manner
  • Ensure there is regular contact with new joiners from offer acceptance to joining the firm, providing information as required to facilitate an effective transition into their new role and to Norton Rose Fulbright
  • Monitor the end of probation process and provide guidance to managers on performance issues.
  • Conduct probation meetings with new employees, collating feedback and escalating issues when appropriate to the relevant Senior HR Manager
  • Monitor fixed term contract expiry dates and production of leaver details/extensions as appropriate after consultation with the relevant Senior HR Manager
  • Support with the transition of Trainees to newly qualified Associates
  • Co-ordinate the exit interview process, conduct meetings with leavers where appropriate and analyse results 


  • Liaise with partners and department managers on their resourcing needs, seeking approval from the Recruitment and Secondment Committee as appropriate
  • Liaise with the Recruitment team regarding vacancies and appointments to ensure a timely and cost effective recruitment solution
  • Promoting the use of alternative resourcing options where appropriate (e.g. Flexible Associates, Consultants and use of Newcastle Hub), providing opportunities for our people to be developed and retained. 

Secondments and Assignments

  • Organise and co-ordinate client secondments both to and from Norton Rose Fulbright for relevant departments
  • Maintain contact with secondees during secondments
  • Work closely with the Global Mobility team, deal with all immigration issues that arise, for example work permit and indefinite leave to remain applications
  • Monitor all Secondment end dates and extension requests  


  • Undertake ad hoc project work, liaising with HR in other locations as necessary and co-ordinating with HR specialist teams (e.g. Employee Relations) as necessary
  • Produce ad hoc reports as and when required 

Skills and Experience Required 

  • Previous HR experience at HR Assistant / HR Advisor level, ideally in a Professional Services or Legal environment
  • Strong IT skills (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Accuracy and strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritise
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment with demanding internal clients
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively
  • Strong GCSEs and A-levels (or equivalent) (A-C). Ideally a degree in an HR related subject
  • Must present a professional, friendly and client focused attitude and approach at all times
  • Confident and flexible approach to taking on new tasks and projects
