The head of resourcing reports into the HR director and acts as a senior part of the leadership team. One of the key responsibilities is to develop the organisation’s approach and strategy towards talent. Ultimately, it will be your duty to create a recruitment and resourcing plan to drive your business forward. 

What does the head of resourcing do?

As the head of resourcing, developing and delivering on plans and tactics, focusing on talent acquisition, diversity and employer brand is a main focal point of this role. Another is ensuring that the business values and culture are up to date and that the business has the right tools to build on its objectives and strategies in order to attract the right talent. 

You’ll be expected to run a team solving resourcing challenges across the entire organisation. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential as you will be liaising with employees across all levels and potential candidates.

Sample head of resourcing responsibilities

Your responsibilities as the head of resourcing will include:

  • Control and responsibility of the entire resourcing process, often including managing budgets
  • Managing outsourced recruitment contracts 
  • Working internally to build tools to aid the organisations objectives and strategies
  • Using your teams as well as your own expertise to solve resourcing challenges
  • Ensuring the company culture and values is representing throughout the resourcing process
  • Workforce planning and pipelining to ensure that the organisation’s talent is fit to meet future challegens 
  • Ensuring the company is seen as an employer of choice by talent, whether junior, senior or executive level
  • Delivering reports on the resourcing data and analytics when required
  • Adding value to the budget and financial constraints by forming and maintaining top talent teams
  • Taking into consideration the organisation’s behaviour and values and role modelling these

Head of resourcing skills and competencies

Although being qualified to degree level or above is not a requirement for being a head of resourcing, it is essential to have several years’ experience in recruitment and resourcing. You will also need to be comfortable with managing people. 

Understanding recruitment legislation and what the requirements are is key, particularly when it comes to adapting and implementing plans and strategies within an organisation. You will have excellent communication and customer service skills and have a good understanding of data and analytics.

Heads of resourcing will be expected to be proficient in the following:

  • Strong knowledge and previous experience within a resourcing function
  • Experience in recruitment and talent assessments
  • An understanding of diversity and how this impacts and connects with resourcing 
  • Creating talent acquisition programmes and implementing an employer brand which corresponds to the organisation’s culture 
  • Strong relationship building, management and communication skills
  • Understanding of data and analytics with an ability to demonstrates to others its impact and return on investment 
  • Motivating and engaging the team and across the whole organisation 

Head of resourcing salary expectations

The average salary for a head of resourcing in the UK is £47,500.

Depending on the company size and experience though, the wage can be anything between £45,000 and £50,000. At the upper end of the scale, a head of resourcing role features as one of the 22 highest paid HR jobs in the UK.
