Gaylene Gould explored the notion of personal and professional blocks at September’s breakfast roundtable, where members were encouraged to participate in ‘conversations’ with one another to explore their attitudes to success and failure.
Members were given ‘conversation menu cards’ and discussed questions such as “in what ways have you been lucky in your career? Who might you be able to help overcome their current challenges or obstacles?” and “the biggest obstacles to getting things done are internal, not external – do you agree?”
“Your personal views determine what you see to be a barrier,” Gould told members. “But luck can be disguised as failure.” If you view success and failure as defined elements, you are operating with a fixed mindset. If you have a growth mindset, your response to situations would be “let’s just see” – which, for Gould, reframes the concept of a ‘block’.
“In the world of art, sometimes masterpieces come from the biggest experiments and the concept of learning as you go,” she said. “So by giving yourself a different intention – being present and alive to whatever happens and being ok with it – you can connect with your feelings.”
