Video: Keynote at ASHRM 2016
Talk synopsis: The HR profession has continued to evolve from an administrative and technical/functional focus to a strategic focus. For the past 20 years, strategic HR has been in vogue. Strategy is a mirror in which HR sees and aligns HR practices to help deliver business results. We believe the next step in HR is to focus on ‘HR from the outside in’.
In this view, strategy is not a mirror, but a window through which HR professionals align their work to forces and stakeholders outside their organization.

Introduction to Dave Ulrich
Exclusive Q&A
Here, professor Dave Ulrich speaks about the future of HR.
Three key questions
This session will be woven around three key questions:
- Perspective: What is your greatest work challenge today?
We will show the evolution of how HR adds value, ending with focus on external conditions and stakeholders. We will review external conditions and specific stakeholders and how HR can respond to each. Participants will leave with a perspective about how HR can help build business value by connecting to external business conditions and key stakeholders
- Outcomes: What does HR uniquely bring to the strategy discussion?
We will talk about how each function brings unique value to the strategy discussion. We will show that HR should be the architect and anthropologist for talent, leadership, and capability. We will highlight trends in each area and participants will leave with a clear sense of their unique contribution to business dialogue.
- Transformation: What are the keys to HR transformation?
We will discuss how HR transformation must include discussion of the HR structure (how HR is organised), practices (what HR does), competencies (what skills HR professionals possess), and analytics (how to measure HR effectiveness). We will highlight latest thinking on each area, presenting the findings of the latest (7th) round of the HR Competency Study, involving more than 30,000 participants.
