How does HR make a difference to the work of HM Prison Service?
HMPS is a large, complex organisation. Our work has an impact on the fabric of our society. It is not about just locking up offenders. Rehabilitation is a lengthy and difficult process that requires a large team of dedicated professionals – with each role coming with their own challenges and constraints.
We are fundamentally a people business. Our success is determined by the commitment and performance of the managers and staff working with prisoners. Our People Strategy, delivered through our HR Business Partner team is an essential part of our meeting and exceeding targets set by the Government.
Our HR Transformation Project
The HR Transformation Project that the Prison Service is undertaking one of the largest in Central Government so far and the new Shared Service Centre is central to all of this. HMPS is spending around £30 million on implementing the new working model alone, which shows the sheer size of the change.
Implementing Shared Services with a service centre and regional field teams – allows for these professional HR roles to move from the traditional and more administrative position to one that is similar to a consultant, project manager and advisor.
Is this really for me?
Working at such a senior level within HMPS comes with real responsibility. You’ll have to take ownership of your ideas and use your credibility and autonomy to follow them through.
