About Us:
Speaking Up is a multi-award winning charity that exists to give people with learning difficulties, mental health issues or a disability across the UK a voice and control over their lives so they can move away from a position of disadvantage and exclusion.
Our mission can be summed up in the three words: Voice | Action | Change. Put simply, if you give people a voice, they can take positive action and create change in their lives.
Having a voice is the key to unlocking the door to a better life – we have observed big differences in the lives of those people with a voice and those without. We combine innovative projects with country-wide advocacy services. We also share our unique knowledge and expertise through a thriving publications and consulting business.
The people we help:
Speaking Up supports some of the most disadvantaged and excluded young people and adults in our society. Our projects support:
People with disabilities who, in comparison to their non-disabled peers, are:
· more likely to live in poverty
· less likely to have educational qualifications
· more likely to experience hate crime or harassment
People with learning disabilities who, in comparison to their non-disabled peers, are:
· more likely to have their children removed
· less likely to be married or have sexual relationships
· less likely to have contact with friends
People with mental health problems:
· At any one time one in four adults is facing some kind of mental health problem.
· Mental health problems often co-exist with other issues including homelessness, poor physical health and learning disabilities
· Only 21% of people with mental health problems who could work are in employment. Yet, this remains a real ambition for the majority of people with mental health problems.
Supporting Speaking Up:
Speaking Up can offer a range of opportunities for private sector organisations to support our work and help transform the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in our society. This can include financial support towards our projects, volunteering opportunities and gifts in kind.
We welcome organisations to contact us to discuss our work how we can work together on future projects.
