Interview Tips for Candidates - Ortus HR

BEFORE

  • Prepare thoroughly by researching the company
  • Think about what you want to let the interviewer know about you
  • Review your CV and prepare answers to anticipated questions
  • If you are doing a competency based interview ask your consultant to discuss this in detail, so that you can prepare tailored answers
  • Check the logistics of getting there on time
  • Dress professionally in business attire, even if you know the employer has a casual dress policy

DURING

  • Turn up a few minutes early to compose yourself
  • Greet the interviewer by name and shake hands firmly but without entering into test of strength
  • Take your lead from the interviewer – sit when they sit, have a drink if they are etc
  • Sit upright without being starchy, smile and maintain good eye contact
  • Let your personality show itself through your answers
  • Answer questions directly and concisely
  • Don’t be afraid to pause for thought
  • Ask intelligent questions when given the opportunity. Stick to business issues rather than benefits packages
  • Never assume a meeting is going well or badly…keeping giving your best

AFTER

  • Call your consultant to provide and receive feedback
