Conclusion
The HR Market Trends Survey 2006 supports the theory that the HR profession is continuing to be more proactive and strategically aligned. 2006 presents new trends such as Leadership Development, Talent Management, and Organisational Development as the leading issues that face the HR profession.
These results are comparable with the Interim Performers HR Survey produced in 2004 that recognised the beginning of the HR profession’s shift away from the administrative and policing function of Personnel to a more strategic function. With 63% of this year’s respondents commenting that HR is recognised by the board in their organisation, the function is showing positive developments over time, however there still seems to be room for improvement.
With an overwhelming number of this year’s respondents commenting that Talent Management is a growing concern within their organisation, HR is also making positive steps towards finding ways to retain their best talent. Organisations are offering flexible working options as well as training and development for their employees in order to attract & retain talented people.
For the next five years, the HR profession identified Talent Management and Leadership Development as being the most important issues they will be facing. The HR profession is concerned about the next generation of business leaders lacking HR skills such as Organisational Development, Compensation & Benefits and Performance Management skills.
It still seems to be true that HR has a long way to go before it universally has a seat on the Board, or on the Executive Team. This year’s HR market Trends Survey 2006 shows that the HR profession has identified the areas in which it needs to develop and is showing positive progression towards a more business focused and strategic HR function.
