As the author of "Millennials Incorporated" (Millennials = Gen Y), and as someone who conducts seminars for well-known companies throughout the US about recruiting, managing and retaining Gen Y, I can say with a certain amount of authority that this is one of the most unique generations our world as ever seen. And corporations are going to great lengths to adjust their cultures to accommodate them.

Why? Well, I could go on and on, but one main reason is that in the US we are going to be facing a serious labor shortage because of Boomers retiring in mass over the next 5-15 years, and our birth rate has not remained high. Research shows that the US could be facing a shortage of 35 million skilled and educated workers over the next 2-3 decades. And other countries, such as Japan, are facing the same issue. Some Japanese companies are even offering paid leave for employees to receive fertility treatments!

This is also the first generation to share similar traits, and similar demands on employers. Like I mention in my book, it's almost as if the Boomer parents in the US have raised this generation globally because so many Gen Yers around the world are similar.

They are the future of all of our countries, and are arriving into the workforces globally requiring and requesting the same things. I hear managers in the UK, India, China, etc expressing the same challenges with this new generation as US employers do.

They are truly our first ever "global" generation and will impact the world, and workforces, like no other before them.

And, no, I'm not a Millennial. I'm 44, so that puts me on the "fence" of being a young Boomer or older Gen Xer.

1. They are incredibly egocentric and expect the world and the workplace to revolve around them. One reason is that unlike previous generation X and baby boomers they have received unprecedented levels of parental support and concern in relation to their development. There's therefore a bit of the mini-Emperor syndrome about them.

2. More attractively they are very quick to learn and innovate. These skills have never been more in demand as we truly operate in workplaces governed by change, connectivity and globalisation. So they are in demand.

3. Generation Y have an instinctive grasp of brands. This is reflected in their use of social network sites to demonstrate their own distinctive identity and voice. This brand-dexterity creates both a cause and effect: it forces product producers and companies to recognize that their success is now intrinsically linked to the power of their brands if they are to appeal to the consumers of the future. And it means that the world that Gen Yers choose to move in is defined by strong and authentic brands which are pushing up irresistibly against old school brands.

I could go on. In short, Generation Y is creating a tsunami effect with any environment that they come into contact with. Their needs and agendas are not negotiable. Their strength is that they have the future on their side.

The real insight in this posting for me comes right at the beginning, with Hilary's insight that the "Gen Y phenomenon appears to be driven by a fear of the impending labour shortage". Yes, these new young guns in the job market are subtly different from Generation X and Baby Boomers. But they aren't radically different, and the idea of arrogant graduate divas isn't entirely fair. In fact, that bad reputation is the product of the fear Hilary is referring to, and the media playing upon the fear. We need to understand Generation Y better, not because they are violently revolutionising the workplace, but because they are evolving it. And the companies who prove to be the most successful at evolving with it will be the people taking on board all the advice from experts like Hilary. Gen Y expects to have what is known as a 'portfolio career', spanning several different job roles, companies and even industries. Recent research by recruitment consultancy FreshMinds Talent (www.freshminds.co.uk/talent) suggests that nearly half of Gen Y plan to swap industries in the next 15 years. And I can sympathise, having started my career as a sports journalist before venturing in to the brave new world of marketing. I wanted to challenge myself, and moving on was the right decision for me and countless others of my peers.
