Recognising your talent | make good people great

1. Show the difference

Work with the individuals in your team to clarify the differences between doing their job well and excelling.

2. Practice what you preach

Become mindful of your own behaviour and remember that your team will use you as their model of peak performance.

3. Give them a prize

Reward peak performance and make sure this is different to the rewards for competent performance. Are the differences appealing enough to ensure people aim for peak?

4. Avoid vanishing victories

Be sure that you give the right level of praise and celebrate when great things happen rather than moving quickly on to the next project.

5. Be there for support

Arrange regular meetings to help people stay on track. Listening to the individual and helping them solve their problems means that they will be able to do it themselves should a similar situation arise.

6. Agree specific goals with clear measures

Make sure the goals make them feel part of something that is exciting.

7. Strike the balance

Find the right amount of challenge and skill. Too much challenge leads to feelings of anxiety, but a surplus of skill can lead to boredom.

8. Take time to reflect

Recognise and reflect on events as they happen by asking questions informally or during meetings. This will help raise awareness in your team and help them feel their experiences are valued.

9. Spot what stops them

Help people identify their distractions and then reduce them. Are there simple processes you can put in place to help people focus on doing a great job?

10. Give them your word

Show commitment to the individual, have a clear understanding of their motivations and make sure you are helping them achieve their own personal dreams and desires.
