1. Blur the boundaries
Treat work as part of your life not something that is a separate entity.
2. Manage expectations
Be clear and honest up front if you’re going to be working late tell those that it will effect. If it means you need to say no to something, say it, rather than disappointing later.
3. Clear your mind
Leave your to-do list on your desk. Use your travel time to let your mind leave the office and get ready for your destination.
4. Share the headlines
Give each part of your life a glimpse of the other. Spend 10 minutes sharing your day with the people at home or your weekend plans with a colleague. Keep it brief and interesting then move on so as not to bore them.
5. Challenge yourself
Work provides us with plenty of challenges but at times home life can be more humdrum. Set yourself a personal challenge that motivates you be that running a marathon or learning to paint and throw yourself into it wholeheartedly.
6. Import your skills
If you are a master at writing reports how can you use this skill at home? Is it time to start the novel? Use your skills from one part of your life to enrich another.
7. Focus
Give whoever you are with your full attention. At home, focus on your partner rather than worrying about work tomorrow. The same goes for work think budget sign off, not new bathroom.
8. Pace yourself
Don’t put yourself under pressure to maintain a perfect balance between work and home. Look at a couple of months or even the whole year, there will be ebbs and flows, but has there been the right balance over a period of time?
9. Take time out
If it all gets too much, take time off. Recharging your batteries can be the perfect way to help you focus on what matters most.
