Leaving your job | how to leave on a high

1. Be consistent

The story you choose to share for your future plans must be the same story everyone hears.

2. Accept that relationships will change

Some people will feel they can talk to you more openly others may shut you out and you need to respect that.

3. Think about what you have learnt

How has this helped you get where you are today and what skills are you taking away with you.

4. Spend time with people

It's important others feel excited and enthusiastic towards you. Remember your network today could be your client tomorrow.

5. Keep your professional pride and clearly handover your workload

Valuable time invested on this will ensure that you will leave with people respecting you.

6. Remember people will react differently to your departure

Think about the people you are leaving behind and how they might be feeling about the situation.

7. Be balanced when you talk about your future

There will be positives to your new role, but there will also be challenges, be sure to share both ends of the spectrum.

8. Manage any politics

It's important to minimise any political kickback, your boss losing a key figure in the team or colleagues losing a mentor.

9. Remember you are on your own and be ready to deal with these feelings

Replacements may step in and other people’s focuses may change, but don’t take it personally.

10. Stay in touch

If you make the promise to keep in touch then be sure to make sure it happens.

Okay slight exaggeration, BUT, entering in my 10 digit phone number and using my index fingerprint to get through the turnstile is pretty high tech for a quick sweat. And this is just a regular 24 Hour Fitness Center… not ultra, not even sport.
