As a coach I often have a number of frustrated professionals who feel that they should be doing something different with their life. This can be with the job that they are actually doing or in many instances trying to find an outlet outside of their nine to five. My simple answer to them is this, try a little career foreplay.
After some clients have recovered from their shock I explain exactly what I mean.
Get Naked
Don't be afraid to be open and honest to those close to you about what you are looking to do. Bounce a couple of ideas around with some friends and colleagues about what you are trying to do. Whether you are thinking of moving to a new job, seeking a promotion or totally changing career all together talk about it candidly with those around you and value their feedback. Hopefully those closest to you will be straight with you and if not a coach will always ask you direct questions without emotional attachment.
Experiment
Find out what works for you. Sometimes this may mean you volunteering in a specific field. I have witnessed people make jumps between industries and career paths simply because they volunteered in that industry. Even though you may not be paid for it what a way to find out what works for you.
Ask Questions
Informational interviews are so underrated but face it, what's the cost of asking someone about the job or career path they have followed. While students tend to be the most eager to follow this is also great for seasoned professionals. Through your network of family, friends and colleagues you can ask simple questions created by you and see if it works for you.
Have Fun
Don't be frigid about exploring new opportunities. Have fun. Draw pictures. Design a career map of possibilities. Write down a list of benefits (and to be safe costs) to your lifestyle of exploring or moving into a new career. Whatever rocks your boat, just have a bit of fun when you are looking into what the future can hold for you.
Like fulfilling sex, a career that you are really passionate about, needs to tick the boxes that will work for you. So go out there and have a little career foreplay if you want to really find the work you love.
