12 month undergraduate scheme

Yorkshire Forward has 5 offices across the Yorkshire and the Humber region; Leeds, York, Hull, Wath and Bradford.

Yorkshire Forward prides itself on providing placements for students with the opportunity to develop their skills and take on real responsibilities in preparation for their future careers. Yorkshire Forward offers twelve month Undergraduate placements to those students who are required to complete a year in employment as part of their degree. They have been offering placements for seven years.

Steps to implementation

Prior to intake each year, managers at Yorkshire Forward consider tasks and projects the placement students will be involved in, in order to ensure that for each placement offered is a genuine benefit to the business and the student.

Placements are then advertised through universities and applications accepted online via the Yorkshire Forward website. Placement students are also involved with career fairs and giving presentations to give a student perspective on the scheme.

Benefits of the scheme

The scheme undoubtedly Benefits both the organisation and the undergraduates. One key benefit is that undergraduates assist with real work that has tangible Benefits to the organisation.

The undergraduates can also offer a unique outlook on the work they are involved in enabling an injection of creative new ideas that can improve current ways of working. Undergraduates also offer up-to-date professional skills learnt at university.

Results of the scheme

2009 is the seventh year of Yorkshire Forward's successful undergraduate scheme. The placement year is a rewarding experience for any undergraduate, with knowledge and skills learnt at university being put into practice and built on in a work environment.

Tom Riordan, chief executive, comments:

Individually and collectively they have contributed a great deal to Yorkshire Forward and I am proud of the positive impact they continue to have across the organisation.”

Key tips

• Applicants should research the organisation thoroughly.

• An introductory handover is given prior to the official start date. At the handover they are introduced to their team and meet the current undergraduate who conducts a detailed handover including notes.

• The HR undergraduate manages the recruitment process for the next group of undergraduates.

• All undergraduates work on a project set by the chair/ chief executive.
