Bryson Family Services placement scheme

Designated Practice Learning Centre for the Degree in social work

The purpose of the work placement is to offer students, supervised and assessed practice learning which will offer a range of experiences to the student; these are known as Practice Learning Requirements. There are nine mandatory assessed practice learning requirements which students are required to cover over the course of their practice learning periods.

We seek to be creative and flexible in helping the students to meet the practice learning requirements that are stipulated by the social work degree, to enable the social work students to demonstrate their competence as fully rounded professionals, based on sound understanding of human development; of the systems in which they live and work; and methods of intervention which have been proved to produce beneficial outcomes for people who use social work services.

Steps to implementation

Bryson have been involved in offering social work training since 1916, and over the last 22 years have developed structured practice learning opportunities in partnership with the universities throughout Northern Ireland.

Benefits of the scheme

The benefit of the work placement is for the social work student to acquire and demonstrate transferability of knowledge, skills and values in practice. The student is enabled to make use of innovative real life practice within the voluntary, statutory and community sectors; there is dual multi-site learning with others, including service users, other disciplines and professions; of learning from current, previous life and work experiences.

The Benefits to the family support service is: the waiting list is reduced, hence, service users waiting time for service is reduced and the family support team and the service user benefit from fresh theory, knowledge and skills from the student.
