An Introduction to publishing – 8 week internship
Emerald believes it's vital that graduates have real work experience under their belt as well as their degree, so they have a good idea what it is really like in the world of work and to help them make the right decision about their chosen career and industry. Emerald also wanted to build closer relationships with the University of Leeds to develop a talent pool to help with future recruitment for graduate entry positions.
Steps to implementation:
Emerald provided internships in collaboration with the University of Leeds for the first time in 2009, offering an ‘Introduction to Publishing’ for students who may not have considered a career in this area or were unsure if it was for them. The process of setting up the internships was made very easy and straightforward by the University of Leeds Career Centre. They provided the guidance and knowledge to help us put the internship programme together, advertised the positions and assisted with the interviewing stage.
The students had a training plan which detailed the training they would receive over their 8 weeks with Emerald. In addition to their project work, each week the students met with a different director to learn about all areas of the business. They also met with different senior managers from the key areas of the business to get an overview of the different departments as an opportunity for them to explore other areas of the business they might be interested in.

Benefits of the scheme
Emerald has found providing student placements to be a most rewarding experience and very beneficial to the business in several areas.
- The completed projects were real projects that the business had put on hold, therefore the students made a valuable contribution in enabling areas of the business to move forward that would not have otherwise been able.
- The student placements have also allowed Emerald to build relationships with local universities and build a talent pool to help with future recruitment for graduate entry positions.
Results of the scheme
- Both of the two student placements made a very positive impression on all directors, senior managers and employees alike around the business ensuring that Emerald will offer further placements in the future.
- Other universities both locally and publishing specialist universities in the UK and worldwide have heard that Emerald are offering student placements and have contacted the learning and development officer to enquire about the possibility of Emerald also working with them in the future.
- Both students applied for vacancies within the company and were successful in being appointed as permanent members of Emerald staff and continue to do extremely well within their new roles.
Key tips
- Ensure the job description of the internship is clear and explains fully the responsibilities of the role.
- Ensure the intern role is varied with diverse tasks to ensure the intern gets the most out of the experience.
- Hold a feedback session at the end of the internship to gather feedback on the interns experience and learning and to improve the internship for the future.
